Homelessness, unfortunately, is very much present in Denver, and we are seeing an increase in numbers, particularly among people who are homeless for the first time. In fact, four out of five individuals SFC helps say that they are experiencing homelessness for the first time in their lives.
The 2009 Point in Time Study reports that 11,061 persons were homeless in the metropolitan area.
St. Francis Center serves a vital niche in the homelessness continuum.
We not only provide a place for people who are homeless to stay during the day, we also connect those who are homeless in downtown Denver with both information and referral resources and with our day shelter through the services of our Outreach Program. At St. Francis Center, we provide showers, storage, use of telephones and a mailing address; as well as medical, mental health and VA assistance on scheduled days. We also offer programs such as employment assistance and housing.
While staff have been added to help manage the increasing needs, resources are being strained because of the demand being placed on them. We rely heavily on the generosity of both individuals and companies in the Denver community to meet these needs. Whether you’re an individual or a corporation, there are a number of ways you can help:
